Welcome to the fun, dark world of Dexter Simmons. The American designer presented his SS18 collection at Los Angeles Fashion Week featuring a fresh take on avant-garde looks.
The designer gained mainstream recognition after appearing on Rihanna’s Styled to Rock and on Project Runway. Apart from being a talented designer, Simmons leaves his unique mark in various projects from editorial shoots, to art installations.
This season’s collection presented a variety of unique, unisex pieces in a (mostly) dark colour palette with the occasional splash of yellow, gold or red. The overused camouflage pattern, which we repeatedly saw on the European catwalks for last few seasons, appeared in unexpected touches. Even studs were presented in a clever way teamed with oversized jewellery and unique headpieces.
Although quite bold, the collection is wearable, especially for those of us trying to stand out. Simmons seems to bring a fun, playful side to the dark gothic garments, mixing textures and patterns using fabrics such as cotton lace and leather bringing us an innovative collection that was created to stand out.
