This season, London based Georgian designer David Koma explores the elements of Haute Couture and sportswear for spring/summer 2018. His designs display as always sophisticated sex appeal and present the David Koma girl: strong, sexy but super feminine at the same time. This season she is also quite athletic – the visual properties of sportswear set the overall tone for the collection, but they are realised in techniques and fabrication associated with expert craft.
The colourful sheen and elasticity of the boxing wardrobe meet the bold and graphic lines symbolic in the work of artist Kerry Vesper. simple and sharp monochrome palette with the designer’s signature black, bright blue, blood red, white and nude, exemplifying the contrast lines employed throughout the collection. Together, they are juxtaposed with the architectural ruffles of Pierre Cardin – who serves as an eternal inspiration to the designer – in a contemporary, high-velocity blend. Sportswear classics take on the glamour of the evening wardrobe, and the overflowing ruffles of cocktail dresses and sculptural tailoring assume the dynamic and faintly futuristic codes of athletic wear. We saw interesting fabric mixes, lace, silk and beads. Flocking appears on silk tulle as a nod to the velour of activewear and floral lace alludes to sporty mesh. Crepe, taffeta and leathers are used throughout, interrupted by technical jersey and scuba presenting yet another skin tight, body contouring signature collection.
